Well here we are starting another academic year and waiting to see what October brings – if you had a magic wand what would you wish for?

There are two important consultations out for comment at the moment both from BIS: SKILLS FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH about the direction of skills policy, and A Simplified Further Education and Skills Funding System and Methodology – both were published in July and the deadline for comment is the 14th October. We are looking at them now and planning to respond sooner rather than later. If you would like to pass comment through us then please do so, but soon! Meanwhile where is that wand………?

Here at Linking London we, like everyone else, are trying to read the runes of the new coalition government.

One of the most fundamental shifts we are coming to terms with at the moment is the notion that the era of government department direction and regulation in the qualification arena is being dismantled.

What's the future of online prospectuses with XCRI? Is XCRI-CAP likely to be adapted as the main standard for online prospectuses under the new coalition government? Is your institution ready for such a standard? Please share your views.

With three months to go to the next general election, have you thought about what a victory for Labour or Conservatives or Liberal Democrats will mean for the future of education? We have an event on the 17th March to discuss the major parties' approach to eduction. In the meantime why not post your questions to Steve Besley and the political think tank representatives through us, or just blog your concerns and major issues here!

Have you seen our article in the TES today - page 4 in the News section of the main paper? This is an excellent article by William Stewart, following up our letter to Ed Balls in the summer about the issues some diploma learners may be facing as they attempt to apply to the university of their choice. What are your views? http://www.tes.co.uk/article.aspx?storycode=6026365

As it's party conference season it seems an appropriate time to be debating which party is more likely to see through the current  developments in the new diplomas. Linking London has been doing a lot of collaborative work in this area and has highlighted for Ministers some of the issues that need addressing.

Are they the qualifications we need for the future prosperity of our economy and people? Are they too complex? Students like them and there are reports of Diplomas increasing student motivation. So who is against them and why?
